When KVItems are encoded or decoded for transfer, the LDAP Data Interchange Format (LDIF) is used.

I invented that format by myself and then found out it already has a name. ;-)
The rules are simple.
* Properties are denoted Key: Value
* Multiple properties of the same item are separated by a line break.
* Line breaks in property values are encoded by adding an extra space after the line break.
* Multiple items are separated by an empty line.
